Enigmatic Pennsylvania-based artist Tobacco is known for casting spells with analog synths and tape machines. As a solo artist, Tobacco employs many of the same styles and strategies that fuel his work with the band Black Moth Super Rainbow, but with a darker, more jarring dynamic. Integrating elements of hip-hop, electro, and experimental rock, he released his full-length debut, Fucked Up Friends, in 2008. His next solo album came in 2010 with the release of Maniac Meat, which garnered widespread critical acclaim, and his 2014 release, Ultima II Massage, reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Tobacco’s just-released album, Sweatbox Dynasty, saw the return of his old technique of recording tracks on cassette and then dropping them on a sampler, leading to a rawness that blends well with his existing sound. The album reached No. 7 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
